Candelilla wax is a natural vegetable wax exuded by the leaves of a small shrub (Euphorbia antisyphilitica) that grows in Mexico and the southwestern US states. It's the second hardest natural wax available, and is composed of wax esters (20-29%), free fatty acids (7-9%), fatty alcohols & resins (15%). It's available as light yellow flakes, with no odour. Soluble in alcohol, insoluble in water.
It's Melting point is marginally higher compared to beeswax, 69-73°C/156.4-163°F, so I recommend melting your candellila wax first when making a recipe and then you can turn down the heat when you add your other waxes and then oils. Typically used at 1-15% - often added to lipsticks to make them firm and glossy and help the lipstick, it's hard to apply to the lips. Amor's recommendation is to use at 5%.
Saponification value: 43-65
It's properties are:
- non-gelling thickener
- viscosity enhancer and plasticiser
- compatible with most natural and synthetic waxes and resins
- excellent filmforming and protecting properties
- effective emollient
- adds nice gloss to lipsticks
Candelilla wax is an excellent choice as a hardener in lip glosses, lipsticks, eye and lip pencils and mascaras for vegan cosmetics.
