Spearmint is a native of the Mediterranean area. A hardy perennial herb, Spearmint reaches about 1 meter (3 feet) in height. It has characteristic lance-shaped leaves with pink or lilac-coloured flowers. |

When opening the bottle you get a fresh minty smell reminiscent of Peppermint. The major difference is that Spearmint oil is sweeter, and not quite as harsh. |

Although Spearmint blends well with most essential oils, it blends particularly well with Basil, Birch, Bergamot, Eucalyptus, Jasmine, Lavender and Rosemary. It has the wonderful ability to balance a blend - if it's too heavy add 1 drop to lift it, and if it's too heady, add a drop to bring it down. |

| Common Uses: |
Spearmint is a wonderful essential oil for children (and our inner child) for digestive upsets whether it's for nausea (sniffy tubes), flatulence, hiccups, indigestion and irregular bowel activity whether it is constipation, diarrhoea or both. It is proven to be an very effective anti-emetic for chemotherapy induced nausea, and National Women's Hospital has reported back to me that my nausea relief inhalers which contain spearmint are very effective during labour.
An uplifting oil, spearmint is great for alleviating fatigue and depression. It is slightly weaker in action to peppermint, though it too is used as a stimulant. It helps to relieve stress and anxiety, again ideal for children as it is one of the few oils that can be used with pre-schoolers, helping to create emotional stability.
As an adult, if you are having to go through your childhood memories to release past trauma, Spearmint is the oil to take with you on your healing journey for your inner child. You may want to blend it with Sweet Orange to help boost the happy memories too.
As an inhalation, spearmint helps relieve mild asthma and catarrhal and sinus conditions - think snotty noses, mouth breathers, so again sniffy tubes are a helpful and safe way for children to use this oil. The ketone particles of this oil help to break down mucous.
In skincare, spearmint works in a similar way, however this time with weepy dermatitis. Consider it for psoriasis too when it is in the pustular phase.

The ancient Greeks used Spearmint to scent their bath water. It also had a reputation for curing sexually transmitted diseases like gonorrhoea, and for whitening teeth and healing sore gums. This might be credited to it’s ability to mimic a local anaesthetic. |
