The preservation of health is easier than the cure.”

BJ Palmer

Hot topic these days is that our immunity comes from how healthy our Gut is. Over the last few weeks I have been attending a series of seminars by Activated Probiotics and how specific species and strains work in the body.

Have you heard of the gut-lung axis? This link is more intricate than anyone realized and when you think of people who suffer constantly from hay fever for years, it’s definitely worth looking into. We also know now that Probiotics are transitional, and stay in the body for a short time, so latest recommendations are to make sure your inulin levels are up as they are your natural source of prebiotics so that your probiotics are as effective as possible. I’ll cover that more a bit further on.

If you have a history of antibiotics (especially as a young child) and immune disorders (allergies, asthma, hay fever, arthritis, etc.), then your gut health does need to be looked at as part of the solution for improving your quality of life.

I know from personal experience how hard it is to find answers and how many years you can go around in circles looking for them. Unfortunately for me, I was born in the 60s and was given antibiotics a lot, including when I was a wee babe due to contracting measles and it causing a respiratory infection - essentially that was my health out the window as I also wasn’t interested in being breastfed.

Antibiotics wipe out all our gut bacteria, not just the nasties, and when I had my faecal microbial analysis done in 2017, we discovered I was a real mess and had no E. Coli, which we do need some of.

So back to Prebiotics and Probiotics. Inulin is a prebiotic, and it comes from fibre, and more specifically, onions, garlic, leeks, celery, and the best way to get it is to cook them low and slow for 15 - 20 minutes with a lid on them so that they sweat and start to break down.

If you’re into your FODMAP you are probably freaking about this right now, however, if you cook them this way, you will be fine, and you will start to improve your gut health. My old cookbooks from the 50s recommend cooking them like this which I find interesting as you can guarantee in today’s rapidly paced world, this will rarely happen, and it’s such an easy way to improve your health.  Traditional French Onion soup is another easy way too.

Once your inulin is producing efficiently, probiotics will be more effective, and for this Spring Season I do recommend Activated Probiotics whose cutting edge scientific research is helping us to understand how our gut microbiome influences almost every aspect of our health. Biome BREATHE contains 2 specific strains that are clinically proven to improve respiratory function, and it’s suitable for children, is wheat, gluten, dairy, lactose, fructose, yeast, nuts, seeds, peanut, soy, egg, fish, shellfish and animal derivative free with no artificial colours, flavours, sweeteners or preservatives, and doesn’t need to be kept in the fridge.

It’s active ingredients are:

Lactobacillus salivarius LSO1 (DSM 22775) 1 Billion

Bifidobacterium breve B632 (DSM 24706) 1 Billion

Dosage is 1 sachet per day for Adults and Children over 3 years old, and my recommendation is to take it for alternate months during your allergy season so your body doesn’t become totally dependent on it and learns to heal itself.

I also recommend using a food diary app like Cronometer for recording your food intake along with any symptoms, flareups and improvements to help you put the puzzle together. Why Cronometer? Because it is one of the few apps that also tells you your macronutrients (vitamins, minerals, amino acids) so you can really see what you are eating and what areas may require extra support, and it has the advantage of being shared to your Clinician so they can also see what’s going on.

I have been using it with my clients for over a year now and it’s very insightful, and we can quickly see where the issues are and why.
