Essential Oil Safety - Inhalation Methods

Jun202021

The hot topic of the moment in the Aromatherapy industry is the safe use of essential oils. Essential oils should be inhaled for a max of 30 minutes, which most people are not aware of.  This is because they affect your adrenal cortex and all the organs in your body via the droplets floating in the air.

Direct Inhalation

There are several methods of Inhalation available:

  • Aroma mists
  • Direct inhalation
  • Steam inhalation
  • Vaporisation

Aroma Mist

is made by blending 1-2% essential oils with an essential oil solubiliser in water in a bottle with a mist spray fitting.

Direct Inhalation

Ideal for blocked sinuses and anxiety, add 1 to 2 drops of pure essential oil to a sniffy tube, handkerchief or tissue, and inhale as required.

Steam Inhalation

Add 3-5 drops of essential oil to a bowl of steaming water and breathe in the vapours. Adding more drops can sting the eyes, so I don’t recommend doing so.

Vaporisation

Candle oil burner - depending on your room size, add 1-10 drops to the filled water bowl and keep alight for 15-30 minutes. Do not leave unattended.

Ultrasonic Vaporiser - This is the safest form of inhalation, and as there is no heat to diffuse the oil, the chemical constituents are not altered. In a group environment, please check with others in the room that they have no allergies before using your essential oils. Some are very overpowering and sting the eyes and irritate the sinus membranes. Others should not be used near babies and children.
