Essential Oil Safety - Internal dosaging
The hot topic of the moment in the Aromatherapy industry is the safe use of essential oils due to Doterra’s constant plugging of internal dosaging. It is against the codes of professional practice for an aromatherapist in Australia and New Zealand to prescribe the oral ingestion of essential oils. In France, it is permitted, however their prescribing aromatherapists are also medical doctors.
When I trained, internal dosaging was banned unless we studied Medical Aromatherapy—medical herbalism and naturopathy combined with aromatherapy, and in Australia you must be an Aromatic Medicine Practitioner to prescribe the method of ingestion. The ATMS (Australian Traditional Medicine Society) states that “in Australia suitably qualified Aromatic Medicine Practitioners may prescribe the ingestion of essential oils providing the essential oils are combined with other non-essential oil ingredients that are listed or registered on the TGA ARTG. The prescribed level of essential oil should be regarded as safe. That is the level of prescribed oil should be less than the maximum levels established by the Australian National Drugs and Poisons Scheduling Committee.”
Essential oil internal dosaging is calculated by weight, along with the recipients body weight. It is not counted by drops or mls, in the same form as any medicinal dosage is calculated. The overall health and the ability of the recipient to process the essential oils without causing damage to their liver, kidneys and other internal organs is also taken into account.
