Red oxide is a shade of brown oxide (an Iron (III) oxide (Fe2O3)) and occurs naturally in the mineral hematite. It comes in several shades of brown and red oxides.
It comes in 7 different shades and they do affect your finished product, and to make life more confusing, they all have the same CI number being 77491.
This is one of the red oxides that is in my CIY Cosmetic Kits (Foundation and Blushes, Lips), however it is a more recent addition as I continue to play with vegan alternatives to carmine (beautiful colour that comes from crushed beetles). It is a purer red than the other two red oxides I currently stock.
Iron Oxides are generally naturally occurring non-toxic inorganic mineral pigments sourced from iron and are considered safe for use in colouring products, including cosmetics and personal care products applied to the face, lips, and the area of the eye, provided they meet certain specifications.
Iron Oxides are a colour additive exempt from FDA certification.
