Description: A perennial, reed-like herb, Cardamom grows wild and is cultivated in India and Sri Lanka. It grows up to 4 metres (13 feet) and has long, green silky blades, small yellowy flowers, with a violet tip and a large fleshy rhizome, similar to ginger. Oblong grey fruits follow the flowers, each containing many seeds. There are two main origins for Cardamom - India and Guatemala. The best is a matter of choice by the buyer.

Common Uses:

Cardamom is particularly helpful for the digestive system. It works as a laxative and soothes colic, wind, dyspepsia and nausea., even pregnancy nausea. It warms the stomach and helps with heartburn. As a massage oil or diluted in the bath, Cardamom oil can assist the digestive system, coughs and as a general tonic.

Cardamom is lovely to breathe in when you're feeling congested - it helps to ease breathing and lift your spirits.

It's considered to be soothing on the central nervous system, helping to relieve nervous exhaustion and depression. It helps to clear a busy mind and can enhance clarity and confidence when feeling overwhelmed or unfocused with work and study projects.

History: Cardamom has long been used as a domestic spice in India, Europe and Middle Eastern countries. It has also been used in both Chinese and Indian medicine for over 3,000 years. Hippocrates recommnended the seeds for halitosis as well as other digestive disturbances.
One of the oldest spices known to us, Cardamom is comparable with saffron and vanilla for price and sensory perception and was an important trade item in ancient times.
