Carnauba wax is a natural vegetable wax exuded by the leaves of a palm tree (Copernicia cerifera) that grows in Brazil. It's known as the hardest natural wax available, and is composed of wax esters (85%), free fatty acids, fatty alcohols & resins (15%). It's available as dark yellow flakes, with no or faint odour. Soluble in alcohol, insoluble in water.

It's Melting point is high compared to beeswax, 80-85°C/176-185°F, so I recommend melting your carnauba wax first when making a recipe and then you can turn down the heat when you add your other waxes. Typically used at 2-40% - often added to lipsticks to make them firm and glossy, however if too much is used, it's hard to apply to the lips. Amor's recommendation is to use at 5%.

Carnauba wax is an excellent choice as a hardener in lip glosses, lipsticks, eye and lip pencils and mascaras for vegan cosmetics.
